Technology updation in Delhi Airport :
Delhi Airport Authorities have newly introduced facial recognition technology recently. This will enable the air commuters entering through the entry points and respective gates taking them to Terminal 2 and 3 with a touch free / contactless entry to the respective Terminals of the Airport. The method of identification is known as DigiYatra facility introduced by the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) which, at present has three Terminals and is considered to be the nation’s largest airport. This facility is likely to be introduced from March 2023 end for Terminals 2 and 3, while the same would tentatively be put into operation in April 2023 for Terminal 1.
What is Facial Recognition?
This technology paves way to match the face of the passengers from a digital image or a frame of a video with the available database with the authorities.
A brief about DigiYatra:
DigiYatra is a biometric boarding system using facial recognition technology to provide a seamless and hassle-free experience for passengers at airports.
The system was first introduced at three major airports in India, viz. Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi on 1st December, 2022. This was introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DigiYatra Foundation. The system also facilitates the passengers to complete the Security check/clearance thereof for passengers without any physical contact. Besides providing the seamless procedure, it also saves the time taken in standing in a long que for getting the Boarding Pass and completing Security Check/Clearance formalities.
It is estimated by the Delhi Airport Authorities Ltd. that at least 40% of the domestic passengers are likely to get themselves migrated to the system.
